Hey! It’s European Maritime Day!

May 20, 2008

Ireland is a maritime nation right? Well today apparently is European Maritime Day. What is European Maritime Day then?

According to the European Parliament Web site…

The European Maritime Day highlights the contribution that oceans and seas make to helping Europe meet the challenges of a globalised world. It is an opportunity to celebrate Europe’s maritime heritage and maritime identity. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of the maritime industries and sectors in Europe’s overall economy, and emphasise the key role of Europe’s coastal regions.

So there you have it.   And if you want to know more, don’t try searching for it on any Irish Government related website.  Instead the EU has asked and answered the question “Why does the EU need a maritime day?”

ACC Bank Cork Week 2008. Message for those racing in an IRC class

May 6, 2008

Via the ACC Bank Cork Week Web site.

Are you intending to race at ACCBank Cork Week 2008?
If so, and you are racing in an IRC class (except the Gentleman`s Class) you will require an ENDORSED 2008 IRC certificate to be eligible to race.

An ‘Endorsed` IRC certificate is one for which the data on the certificate has been audited and if necessary verified by measurement or other methods. The 2005 IRC Congress agreed that a set of common standards for the IRC Rating Authority and Rule Authorities to apply when endorsing a boat’s IRC certificate should be developed and published: these are available on our website www.rorcrating.com

If you do not yet hold a 2008 certificate you will need to submit a revalidation form to renew a 2006 or 2007 certificate; or a new application form which is available on our website www.rorcrating.com.  These must be returned to the relevant office (see below).

If you do not already hold an Endorsed certificate, please contact the relevant office AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to find out about requirements for Endorsement:

GBR boats - the RORC Rating Office  tel 01590 677030 e-mail info@rorcrating.com

IRL boats -  the Irish Sailing Association  tel 01 2710101  e-mail irc@sailing.ie

Other overseas boats - your local IRC Rule Authority as listed on our website www.rorcrating.com and in the back of the 2008 IRC Yearbook.

Fastnet Race 2007

August 13, 2007

After a 25 hour delay due to a severe weather warning, the Rolex Fastnet Race 2007 finally got underway today.   Still it looks like it might be pretty tough on some of the smaller yachts taking part.  From the official Rolex Fastnet Race site..

Chris Tibbs, the meteorologist for the Rolex Fastnet Race, has forecast a south-westerly wind, Force 3/4 (7 - 16 kts) for tomorrow’s start. Tuesday should see the strongest winds, likely to be near the Lizard and Land’s End with the wind south-southwest Force 6/7 (25 - 38 kts), with a possible increase to gale-force Force 8 (34 - 40 kts). By then, the bigger boats will be past and the smaller boats will still have options for shelter if the breeze strengthens.

Yikes.  There are several Irish Yachts taking part and a great way to follow progress is via the Google Earth file.
