Nick Jaffe is sailing back to Australia
July 6, 2007
Nick Jaffe is a 26 year old German/Australian who is determined to sail his Contessa 26 from Europe to Australia single handed. Some may think attempting to sail half way around the world in a 26ft yacht is a little crazy, but the Contessa 26 is a very seaworthy boat and it has been used to do circumnavigations in the past, most notably by Tanya Aebi, in the mid 80’s when she was only 18 years old. We intend to follow his progress and you can too at his bigoceans blog.
In Nick’s own words…
I envision this project as a combination of Art, Technolgy, Environmentalism and Adventure. It is a bringing together of my greatest interests, in order to create a diverse project far greater than myself, one that is overwhelming in every way.
Through art I view this voyage as a performance, a documentary and an experiment in learning, as well as a culminating artwork at the journeys end. It is a serious act of playfulness, a melting pot of seemingly disperate interests, and the making of a child like fantasy.
Technology will help me document the processes of making big things happen, allowing the world to view those processes as close to real time as possible via the world wide web, in mediums such as blogging, micro documentary and cartography. Technology will also play a large part in helping me make this a succesful voyage, via navigation, safety, and communications technology.
Best of luck Nick.
